Eugenio “Gene” Alfonso Tupper
March 10, 1942 - December 11, 2024
With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we celebrate the legacy of Eugenio "Gene" Alfonso Tupper, who passed away on Wednesday, December 11 at the age of 82.
Born in Santiago, Chile on March 10, 1942, to Joaquin Tupper and Maria Valenzuela, Gene was the youngest of six brothers. He immigrated to Portland, Oregon in 1960 to attend the University of Portland. He was proud of his legacy as an integral member of the community of international students that started the Pilots’ now famed soccer program. After graduation, Gene embarked on a professional journey that is now uncommon, having worked for only four companies over his 50-year career, including his early career with Anaconda Copper Company in Chuquicamata, Chile and his return to Portland for his work in the pulp and paper industry with Crown Zellerbach, Weyerhaeuser, and nearly 30 years as an international business manager with Penford Products - a role which truly took him around the world.
Beyond his career, Gene’s life was enriched by his passion for golf and soccer. He was a proud member of Pleasant Valley Golf Club before becoming one of the inaugural members of the Oregon Golf Club in 1992. At OGC, he served as a board member for the Mens’ Golf Association for a time, and his fiercely competitive spirit drove him to a 2004 victory in the club match play tournament. His leadership and camaraderie left a lasting impact on the club’s community.
Gene’s passion for sports extended to stadiums and sidelines. He was a devoted Portland Timbers season ticket holder, traveled to Augusta for many memorable weekends at The Masters, and attended FIFA World Cup matches in Spain '82, USA '94, and Japan & Korea '02. He was an avid fan of Notre Dame football and closely followed his beloved Club Deportivo Universidad Católica, the Chilean professional soccer team. His enthusiasm was contagious, and he shared countless game-day memories with friends and family.
Known as an active man who was not one to sit idle, Gene filled his retirement years with travel, family, and donated his time delivering meals to the elderly and less fortunate through the Meals on Wheels program.
Gene is remembered by loved ones for the warmth and generosity he shared with those around him. He is survived by his loving wife, Cathy, his sons & daughters-in-law Joseph & Julee, Michael & Patty, Bryce & Kate, and Andrew & Amanda, his cherished 11 grandchildren, and his golden retriever Ruby.
Gene’s laughter, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to the people and passions he held dear will forever be remembered. A celebration of Gene’s life will be held in Lake Oswego at Our Lady of the Lake parish on January 11th, 2025 at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his memory to the parish or charity of your choice.
Rest in peace, Gene. Your legacy of love, leadership, and zest for life will continue to inspire all who knew you.
